CARBONDALE, Colorado — Garfield County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Carbondale man for allegedly starting a small brush fire Wednesday night.

According to a Sheriff's Office report, Wesley Paul Bright, 38, of Carbondale was arrested for fourth-degree arson, a misdemeanor, and was booked in the Garfield County Jail. Bright remained in custody Thursday on a $750 bond, according to Sheriff's Office officials.

Carbondale Fire Chief Ron Leach said that the fire started about 7 p.m., and fire crews were able to extinguish it pretty quickly.

“It was a pretty small fire,” Leach said. “It was put out pretty quickly and easily. From a fire protection perspective, it was a pretty easy fire to deal with.”

While Leach did not know how the fire was started, he said that it only burned about one-tenth of an acre, and damaged some wooden posts of a barbed-wire fence.

The fire occurred about 100 yards south of the Highway 82 and Highway 133 intersection, and spread down the embankment of the Roaring Fork River, Leach said. He added that the burn most likely occurred on Colorado Department of Transportation property.

Details of why Bright was arrested were not immediately known because the arrest affidavit was not available Thursday afternoon.

However, Leach said that he would not consider the incident a controlled burn that got out of control, or anything of that nature.

Leach added that the Carbondale Fire Department has not had a problem with controlled burns this year.

“People have been good about calling in and getting permits,” he said.
