CARBONDALE, Colorado — The 11th annual Valley Cruisers Classic Car Show wheels into Carbondale Friday and Saturday, and hopping in the front seat for a ride are several local artists.
The car show opens Friday afternoon with a poker run for the participants at 3:30 p.m., and a “cruise-in” along Main Street at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with the town's First Friday art walk activities.
The car show continues that evening on Main Street between Weant Boulevard and Second Street, and again on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The will be live music by The Strolling Scones Friday night and Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
Getting into the spirit of the weekend is the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, which opens a new exhibit for the month called “Wheels.” The exhibit opens with a reception beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at the CCAH Gallery on Main Street.
“We'll have sculpture, bicycle art, pinewood derby cars, hubcaps … anything to do with wheels,” CCAH Executive Director Ro Mead said.
“We've had a lot of people picking up pinewood derby cars and hubcaps to decorate. It should be a lot of fun,” she said. “It's just another example of how this community works and plays together.”
Also on hand at the CCAH Gallery for the evening will be a new local business, Mountain Utility Electric Vehicles, which is offering up an electric scooter as this year's grand prize in the Carbondale Mountain Fair raffle. Raffle tickets will be on sale Friday night, and the raffle itself takes place at Mountain Fair in late July.
The Friday and Saturday car show will include about 100 vintage and hotrod cars on display up and down Main Street, said Ron Madsen of the Valley Cruisers Car Club.
“We have an extra block this year, so there's room for some more cars,” he said.
A 350 V-8 engine will again be raffled off, but new this year is that the raffle is open for anyone to enter, not just the car show participants, according to Madsen. The Basalt Lions Club will also be serving food.
All types of cars are welcome, not just antiques, Madsen said. For instance, one of the cars on display this weekend will be a Tesla Roadster all-electric car, shown by Daniel and Douglas Grant of Basalt.
And, of course, “If anyone has any old cars that they don't show off very often, maybe they'll want to bring them out and show them off,” he said.
Registration begins at 2 p.m. on Friday, with late registration for the second day at 7 a.m. Saturday on Main Street. Spectators are welcome beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday and at 9 a.m. Saturday. There will also be awards for Peoples' Choice, Mayor's Trophy, Ladies Choice, Best of Show and Top 30.
