CARBONDALE, Colorado — More than 65 artists from Aspen to Glenwood Springs and beyond will be in the spotlight at the Carbondale Community School's sixth annual Roaring Fork Valley Studio Tour this weekend.
The event begins with a kickoff reception and party from 6-10:30 p.m. Friday at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center, in conjunction with the monthly First Friday art walk events around town.
There will be cuisine provided by some of the top local restaurants, plus music by Funky Monkey Thunder Love and the Redtones, a silent and live auction, an art gallery with works by some of the participating artists, a martini bar and a cash bar.
Then, on Saturday and Sunday will be the studio tour where people can purchase maps to follow around the valley to visit artists at work in their studios.
“This is one of the bigger tours we've had,” said coordinator Denise Bruder. “The Community School relies on the studio tour to integrate art into the classrooms through the year for our students.”
Formerly held in the fall, the tour took a hiatus last year and has returned as a springtime event, Bruder said.
“It's a good kickoff to the summer, and I think we'll have better luck with the weather this time of year,” she said. Having the reception in conjunction with First Friday also seemed a natural fit, she said.
“And we moved the reception venue to accommodate more people,” she said.
The tour itself is a true valleywide event, featuring artist studios in Carbondale, Redstone, Glenwood Springs, Basalt and Aspen.
“We do have a lot of studios clustered in Carbondale, but there are definitely a lot of artists participating from throughout the valley,” Bruder said.
This is also the first year that the Community School itself will be included on the tour. A variety of student artwork will be on display at the school, as well as works by several artists from outside the immediate area.
Tickets for the Friday night reception and party are $25 apiece, including one free drink from the bar. Purchase of two tickets includes a studio tour map. Otherwise, the maps alone cost $15.
Tickets and maps are on sale at the Carbondale Recreation Center on Colorado Avenue. Maps are also available for purchase at several participating businesses and locations around Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, Basalt and Aspen.
