Across the Fence



FREE LABOR. The Roaring Fork High School Student Council is sponsoring the school’s annual Rams Day on Friday, May 1, during which students will be volunteering their time in the Carbondale community from 9 a.m. to noon. ON EXHIBIT. Carbondale artist Majid Kahhak will be displaying two landscape paintings in the Aspen Valley Land Trust’s “Earth Day: The Art of Conservation” exhibit, happening April 17-19 at Eighth and Grand (in the former bank building) in Glenwood Springs. A portion of all sale proceeds will be donated to the Aspen Valley Land Trust. Call AVLT at 963-8440 for more information. Also, Kahhak will be painting live on April 25 at the Carbondale Chamber’s annual Taste of Spring fundraiser, from 5-8 p.m. at the River Valley Ranch Barn. SUPPORT THE RODEO. The Carbondale Wild West Rodeo is lining up sponsorships for the upcoming summer rodeo season. Business sponsors will receive visibility in front of nearly 1,000 spectators each week over the 12-week season with a one-time investment of $500 or more. KIDS ON THE AIR. Local high school students will broadcast a special series on community radio station KDNK Mondays from 4 – 4:30 p.m. starting April 13 through May 4. The Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program (AZYEP) and Tomorrow’s Voices are partnering to present student perspectives on the importance of place, sustainability and the need to preserve and protect wilderness. KDNK can be found at 88.1, 88.3 and 88.5 FM and at kdnk.org. Starting things off this Monday will be Shea Thompson, Devon Cormier and Maggie Summers talking about “The Importance of Place.” The remainder of the schedule includes:

Monday, April 20 — “Sustainability,” with Hannah Goulding, Kate Eason and Kate Muir

Monday, April 27 — “Literature of Place,” with Jack Stokan and JR Ackerman

HEADS UP. The Carbondale Parks Department will be burning the pastureland at the Carbondale Nature Park (Delaney park) the week of April 20–24, weather permitting. This controlled burn may be delayed due to inclement weather until the following week •••

HAVE A VOICE. The town of Carbondale is seeking applications from individuals interested in representing the town on the Garfield County Energy Advisory Board (EAB), which provides a forum for the oil and gas industry, the public, impacted landowners and local government to prevent or minimize conflict associated with oil and gas development. The town may nominate one representative and one alternate; nominees are then appointed by the county commissioners and the county’s oil and gas liaison. The EAB meets monthly and reports to the county commissioners on a quarterly basis. Citizens wishing to serve on the EAB should send a resume with a statement of interest to: EAB, Town of Carbondale, 511 Colorado Ave., Carbondale, 81623, or via e-mail to: community@carbondaleco.net.
